On the
fourth day of volunteering, our group was back out in the fields. We went back
to weeding kale where we had left off yesterday. After about an hour, I had the
opportunity to help with transplanting eggplant and pepper plants that were
from the greenhouse. This was done by sitting on an attachment to the back of
one of their tractors. There were two seats and there was a shelf for you to
hold the plants on. This was fun, and while transplanting I got to know another
one of the field workers, Christian. He loved working outdoors in the field,
and we talked the whole hour and half we were on the tractor. After a lunch
break, Tess joined us and Christian took over driving the tractor. Our cohorts
went back to weeding garlic beds from the first day. Tess and I continued to
transplant for three hours. We got really muddy and sun burned. We were having
so much fun that we did not think about our skin frying. Transplanting was fun because we got to
experience how it was done, but also helped to put the work we had done in the
greenhouse on Tuesday into the bigger picture.
During
our time with the workers, I started to notice that the workers ate the food
that they got from work as part of their lunches. Not only do the workers get a
pay check, but they also get a CSA box of vegetables. The farmers that we got
to work alongside all believed in the efforts of JBG and enjoyed the benefit of
eating vegetables that they were working with on a daily basis. For dinner on Thursday,
we had a vegetable heavy meal and we all feel asleep from our physically active
week.
