SALS

Our second day in West Virginia was our first day to go to work; We first went to the old school in Oak Hill, which was about thirty minutes away from where we were staying. While there we got to meet the other people who would be there working with us, which turned out to be about ten or so others. We were introduced to them then we all went to work on different projects. The first project I worked on was with a couple people within our alternative breaks group and some of the other volunteers, What we had to do was to clean out a room which was filled with many old desks and furniture that had to be removed in order to make space for other projects that would have to be done in the room. A lot of the furniture turned out to be pretty heavy so many of the men had to carry it out, where they were to be taken to the basement in the building. The project took quite some time to get completed we finished it in about a total of an hour. After we finished with that project two of my other group members, Sara, Eileen and I went to another room where we needed to paint. We got the chance to get to know one of the other volunteers from West Virginia a little better, named Craig, he also helped us paint the room and we all discussed various topics. It became the room of a lot of attention from many people, because many would filter in and out and join in on the discussions we were having. There was a lot of laughter and fun going on in our little room. I really enjoyed our first day there because we got to know many of them more; they were all very much laid back and fun, and were very kind as well. I would have to say it probably was not what I was expecting because I do not think I thought it would be as much fun as it turned out to be, everyone was very similar to us, we heard many jokes, talked about similar interests, like movies, shows, and life in general. I really enjoyed my first day at working with everyone. After we worked at Oak Hill we went back to Beards Fork where we then went to play with the children at SALS they were all very entertaining as well some of us helped them with their homework and some chatted with them and talked about what they like. One of the little girls was very chatty and funny she discussed who was ghetto and how one should say a specific word if they wished to sound ghetto, she was a very entertaining girl and had me and Eileen laughing a great deal. Overall it was a great day with a lot of fun and learning, I really enjoyed getting to know everyone on our first day there and getting a feel for what the rest of the week would be like.
